Andersonville National Historic Site – Avenue of Flags
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia

The Avenue of Flags is the display of a multiplicity of U.S. flags usually arrayed on both sides of the principal avenue or drive that leads from the main entrance or gate into the cemetery. The Avenue of Flags cemetery and reinforces patriotism, national pride and represents a visible, bold and proud display of flags. In most cases, the Avenue of Flags is only flown on days of special ceremonial significance such as Memorial Day. At Andersonville National Cemetery, the Avenue of Flags display is arrayed five times each year: for the National Former POW Recognition Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day weekends.  For more information, visit http://www.nps.gov/ande/planyourvisit/aveofflags.htm

Join park staff and volunteers for “First Saturday” programs which explore the themes and topics of the 150th anniversary of the Andersonville prison and the Civil War prisoner of war experience. Every two months, the park will focus on a single word or theme that represents the events, conditions, or emotions of prisoners during the war. To expand the prisoner story, the park will also feature other Civil War prisons and draw on their stories to present a fuller picture of a soldier’s life beyond the battlefield. Hodges Hobbies – Southeast Electric Flight Festival
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia

The Fayette Flyers of Georgia are pleased to announce America’s premier electric flight festival, SEFF. The host field will once again be Hodges Hobbies in Americus GA, which features a flat green 1,700ft bermuda grass runway with clear open skies! Pit area and parking are abundant for all. Southeast Electric Flight Festival (SEFF) is primarily for open flying, with some planned special events. On Friday and Saturday there will be flying demonstrations (Noon Demos) by accomplished electric flight enthusiasts, sponsors and show teams. The Staff will be cruising the flightline looking for unique aircraft representing the non-commercial pilots to participate in the noon demos. Andersonville National Historic Site — National Former POW Recognition Day
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia

On this presidentially proclaimed observance we recognize the sacrifices of prisoners of war throughout American history. On April 9, 1942 United States forces surrendered on the Bataan Peninsula, beginning the Bataan Death March. Andersonville National Historic Site — National Park Day
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia

Each year the Civil War Trust sponsors Park Day on the first Saturday of April. This event joins parks and volunteers nationwide for a day dedicated to preserving America’s Civil War sites. Volunteers and park employees will work on rebuilding a replica prisoner shelter in the northeast corner of the prison site. “Running Thru History” – Andersonville 5K Run & Walk –8am
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia

Macon County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 5K Run & Walk on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Andersonville National Historic Site. Proceeds benefit Macon County Recreation and Friends of Andersonville. The race starts at 8:00 a.m., registration begins at 7:00 a.m. The fee is $20.00 before March 31st and $25.00 after March 31st. Online registration ends March 31st. All participants will receive a T-shirt and a Pac Bag filled with goodies. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in each of 7 age groups. There will also be some Fantastic Door Prizes! PLAINS, Georgia

Bobby Salter’s Plains Peanuts & Plains Inn & Antiques present the 8th Annual Plains, Georgia Open Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show. The show will be held on Main St. in Downtown Plains, Georgia, home of former President Jimmy Carter. President Carter is expected to be there Saturday afternoon to make his choice. Entry fee is $20 in advance or $25 on show day. Registration is 8:00 – 11:00 am. Dash Plaques to the first 100. Judging starts at 11am. Awards presented at 3pm.

The Relay for Life of Sumter County is an incredible and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor cancer survivors, raise awareness about what we can do to reduce our cancer risk, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease. Old Farm Day – Carter Boyhood Farm – 10am-3:30pm
PLAINS, Georgia

Old Time Farm Day will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 10am-3:30pm at the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Home located in Archery, Georgia, just west of Plains. This special event, which is free to the public, highlights life in the “good ol’ days.”  Demonstrations will include plowing with mules, blacksmithing, and peanut boiling. Earl Carter’s Country Store will also open and you may purchase items from it. Buy a postcard, and a representative from the Plains Post Office will be on hand to stamp and postmark your purchase. Make plans to visit the Boyhood Farm at Jimmy Carter National Historic Site for Old Time Farm Day. Prison to Peanuts to Park Bicycle Ride from Andersonville to Plains
ANDERSONVILLE and PLAINS, Georgia

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, join the River Valley Regional Commission, Andersonville National Historic Site, Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and Sumter Cycling, Inc., in the Prison to Peanuts Bicycle Adventure. We are encouraging riders of all levels and skills to join us on this amazing opportunity to visit beautiful sites in Sumter County and visit Andersonville, Americus and Plains, Georgia by bicycle. Registration will begin at 8:00 am at the Andersonville National Historic Site. The cost is tba for a half ride and tba for a whole ride. This is a family friendly event. All participants are required to wear a helmet. There will be SAG stops (Support and Gear) with water, fruit and snacks in Andersonville, Americus, Plains, and Ellaville.  Support vehicles will carry a limited supply of water and snacks in case of emergencies. Support vehicles will also monitor traffic and will provide help with minor mechanical issues. Bike to Work Day is an annual event held on the third Friday of May across the United States and Canada that promotes the bicycle as an option for commuting to work. Leading up to Bike-to-Work Day, national, regional, and local bicycle advocacy groups encourage people to try bicycle commuting as a healthy and safe alternative to driving by providing route information and tips for new bicycle commuters. On Bike-to-Work Day, these groups often organize bicycle-related events, and in some areas, pit stops with snacks along bicycle routes. Memorial Day has long been the most important day of the park’s event calendar, with preparations beginning months in advance, leading up to a week’s worth of activity involving staff, partners, volunteers, and the American public. The National Cemetery is open for visitors throughout the weekend, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The annual service occurs at 2:00 p.m. on the Sunday of the holiday weekend.
