Andersonville National Historic Site — First Saturday Programs
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia
Join park staff and volunteers for “First Saturday” programs which explore the themes and topics of the 150th anniversary of the Andersonville prison and the Civil War prisoner of war experience. Every two months, the park will focus on a single word or theme that represents the events, conditions, or emotions of prisoners during the war. To expand the prisoner story, the park will also feature other Civil War prisons and draw on their stories to present a fuller picture of a soldier’s life beyond the battlefield. Peacebuilders Camp – Koinonia Farm – Session One
AMERICUS, Georgia
Peacebuilders Camp at Koinonia Farm is a unique overnight summer camp in rural south Georgia where youth ages 11 to 14 spend a week together learning how to work toward peace and justice. Campers enjoy farm life, play games and sports, go on field trips, learn about human rights, make new friends, and explore the stories of peacemakers past and present. Session One is for ages 11‐12 and will be held July 14‐19, 2014. Campers experience summer life on a Georgia farm. A typical day at camp includes some combination of games, discussion time, sports, crafts, farm fresh meals, chores, service learning, field trips, helping in the garden, free time, storytelling, workshops, and s’mores around the campfire. Registration is open through April 1, 2014. We use a sliding scale tuition system. Every family pays a different amount based on what they can afford. Andersonville National Historic Site – Avenue of Flags:
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia
The Avenue of Flags is the display of a multiplicity of U.S. flags usually arrayed on both sides of the principal avenue or drive that leads from the main entrance or gate into the cemetery. The Avenue of Flags cemetery and reinforces patriotism, national pride and represents a visible, bold and proud display of flags. In most cases, the Avenue of Flags is only flown on days of special ceremonial significance such as Memorial Day. At Andersonville National Cemetery, the Avenue of Flags display is arrayed five times each year: for the National Former POW Recognition Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veterans Day weekends. This event has become a staple in Americus, offering residents and visitors a chance to sample a variety of local cuisine from restaurants in the area. Plains Peanut Festival
PLAINS, Georgia
The 18th Annual Plains Peanut Festival will be held in Plains, Georgia on Saturday, September 27th, 2014. The Peanut Festival is centered around one of the Sumter County community’s claims to fame, its peanut productions, and features the community’s most famous residents in active roles. The festival kicks off with a 1-mile fun run and a 5K road race. People line the sidewalks of Plains each year to watch the unique entries in the parade downtown. Visitors enjoy the all-day event and educational exhibits are on display to accent the importance of agriculture in this region. There is a street dance on Saturday evening, beginning at 8:30 pm. This year’s musical entertainment will be provided by tba.
