Rylander Theatre Downtown Americus

Hairspray delighted audiences by sweeping them away to 1960’s Baltimore, where the 50’s are out – a change is in the air! Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Trunblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight she finds herself transformed from outside to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) with mussing her hair?

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site to dedicate new exhibit in the Plains Depot
PLAINS, Georgia
Jimmy Carter National Historic Site will be unveiling new exhibits in the Plains Depot on March 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. President Carter will be in attendance and will speak on the importance of the depot. After the brief talk, President Carter and the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The train depot, the oldest structure in Plains today, gained national notoriety in 1976 during the presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter. The building was leased to the Carter Peanut Warehouse in the 1970s when Governor Jimmy Carter decided to run for the presidency. He used the train depot in Plains as a center for his presidential campaign. The building was cleaned and painted by Jimmy Carter’s friends and family and officially opened on Easter Sunday, 1976. Dedicated volunteers at the depot greeted thousands of visitors arriving daily to Plains to learn more about candidate Jimmy Carter. Their hard work and dedication paid off on November 2, 1976, when Jimmy Carter was elected the 39th President of the United States.
Following an emotional send-off by the president-elect himself, the “Peanut Special”, an 18-car Amtrak train, pulled away from the rural Plains train station on January 19, 1977, and headed for Washington, D.C. bearing 382 proud and joyous Southerners who had chosen to take the historic 18-hour journey to attend the presidential inauguration on January 20, 1977. The train depot continued to be a popular tourist attraction during President Carter’s term in office. Today the depot stands as the most recognized symbol of the community of Plains and the 1976 Carter presidential campaign. Learn more at www.nps.gov
